PLANTERS

"Based on USDA data from 2009, 4 billion container/plant units  were produced by the container crop industry that used 1.66 billion pounds of plastic...The green industry produces significant amounts of plastic waste in the form of plastic pots and trays, most of which (estimated at over 95 percent) is deposited in landfills. Relatively little of this waste is reused or  recycled."

Editor's Choice

EcoPots has great quality pots said to last 10 years. These are the best recycled planters I have tried yet, with really great quality and thickness to them. They are worth the investment especially compared to their new plastic counterparts.

Value Pick

Some of Bloem's plant pot lines are made of recycled materials (not all of them, though). These are greatly accessible and can be easily found locally or ordered to big-box hardware stores (Lowes, Home Depot, etc.).

Black plastic pots are generally problematic for recycling facilities, meaning they are landfill-bound. Recyclers' optical readers cannot read the black material, they are usually uncleaned and contain dirt and other contaminants, labor costs are high, and other issues.

Participate in take-back programs! You can drop off pots for reuse to nurseries, garden centers, and hardware stores (like Lowes, Home Depot, etc).
